Abstract Wetlands Malfunction or Mother Nature Dennis Beck A beaver dam impoundment/wetlands fed by an acidic discharge from the closed Sonman mine near Portage was the site for a 15 month study of contaminant reactions. Typical wetlands would show improved water quality with reduced concentrations of iron, manganese, acidity and sulfate. During this study there were several sets of analyses that showed spikes in the manganese levels in the effluent. A comparison of pH and manganese at the influent and effluent showed a correlation due to biological (diagenesis) and chemical (disproportionation) influences.
